Baby bat learns to eat fruit [Steve discovers apple]. Baby bat's first taste of fruit.
Here Steve is trying fruit for the first time. We introduce our orphans to fruit at around 7 weeks, starting with steamed apple. They need to learn to chew it and produce spats (the fibre that's left after they've squeezed out the juice) before moving on to the chopped raw fruit that will be their main diet from weaning until release.
They rarely need much encouragement and usually know exactly what to do with it straight away, although they are quite slow at first.

Any bats shown here in captivity are not pets, but protected wildlife in care under a rehabilitation permit. They are released when fit for life in the wild.
